Solid Waste and Landfill

ST. LANDRY PARISH SOLID WASTE
BEGGS, LA

Aucoin & Associates, Inc. was employed by the St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Disposal District’s Commission Members in 1980 to develop a solid waste program for the entire parish of St. Landry. The district was created by the state legislature and has authority to generate funds, collect sales taxes, construct and operate the collection and disposal of solid waste in the parish.
Today the landfill consists of a 190 acre site with 9 cells complete with roadways specifically designed for handling large compactors and dozers. The facility also contains a concrete ramp for special deposition of white goods (abandoned refrigerators, stoves, deep freezers, etc.), a tire shedder, a maintenance building with specialized equipment, parking areas, and an office building. Landfill leachate (water exposed to solid waste) is collected and treated onsite within a three cell oxidation pond prior to discharge into a nearby stream.
Aucoin & Associates continues to monitor operations and changing requirements for the sanitary landfill and serves as design engineers for compliance with appropriate federal and state agencies.
The landfill operation and designs have received national and state special recognition and is one of Aucoin & Associates’ projects that best depicts the firm’s ability to provide quality service.
